Happy Happy Temple Angkor Thom

This temple has so many faces. It has a central pillar with 39 other pillars surrounding it.  It is very symmetrical and each pillar has four faces. Every face has an idyllic and happy peaceful look which just makes you smile and feel good. It was built by a King that tried to make the temple serve both Buddhists and Hindus.  The deities have characteristics of both styles so either group can feel welcome to pray there. As Tim told us the histories of the various temples the stories were similar.   First it was a Hindu Temple, then it was converted into a Buddhist Temple.  Buddas were added until another King or a conquering army changed it back.  Out go the Buddas and back to Hindu.  This was like the tides back and forth.  So the king tried to bypass all that and make his temple for both groups.
