27 December 2023 Petra: Down Into the Center of the Town and a Stop For Lunch

In the center area there were Temples, Shrines, Fountains and a large Market area.  Many of the areas are still in ruins suffering from two major earthquakes.  The first was in 363 CE toppled many of the most important buildings and homes of the people.  Much was rebuilt, only to fall again in 551 CE after another earthquake.  The double earthquake whammy combined declining income from incense trade spelled problems for Petra.  The trade in incense was what had kept the Nabataeans wealthy but the trade routes shifted and the incense now sailed to Europe from Syria.  Petra declined but was never fully abandoned, only a small number Bedouin lived there.  It was re-discovered by the western world in 1812 by a Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhardt.

A one mule shack

Goats up on the cliff

The goats are tiny specks

This is the most intact building in Petra, the Qasr al-Bint, it survived the earthquake of 363 which wiped out many of the buildings

We could not enter as the building did not look so stable the walls are 77 feet tall

They used juniper planks and solid foundations for this temple dedicated to Dusahra

The water diversion canal in the middle

Showing off on the donkey

All the Donkeys are lined up to take people up to the Monastery, some 850 steps

The rubble on this hill shows how much of Petra is still in ruins

The foundations for the homes of the inhabitants  it is believed 25,000 people lived in this valley

The Temenos Gate to Trajan's Market  It was 55 feet wide

Here is how the gate looked

Details on the gate

The gate had three arches and was very tall, seen in front of the Shrine

The Great Temple was excavated in the help of Brown University

A camel in the rocks, two humps

The colonnade was the major shopping district

The road along the market

Still lots of Rubble

There is a 400 year old pistachio tree at this fountain the Nymphaeum

No pistachios for us

But a nice spot of shade

A very interesting rock sticking out of the rubble

Mr. Ed's place

Dog and balloon

The Roman road

Further up to the back of  the Great Temple

From where we sat for our lunch

Columns stretching out

27 December 2023 Petra; A Walk Along the Street of Facades

Around the corner from the Treasury is the Street of Facades These are also memorial tombs but they are either less decorated or more deteriorated.  Either way these are older and less elaborate.  However they were no less interesting.  After these Bassil and I took the tricky high trail and Leslie stayed on the main trail.  The high trail was tricky without stairs or railings.  We entered small and large openings and even climbed out the back of one and then up and over the top of the it.  After a half hour we climbed back down and rejoined Leslie.  She had been communing with the kitties.

The valley opens up and we have reached the Street of facades

Very tall with a minimal opening It looks as if there is more to is that is still underground

The colors of the sandstone are quite nice

The pigeons have taken up home in the old water delivery system

The folks that are taking a break show how large this tomb is

This would be for an entire family

This one was carved on all three sides

It did not fare well and is very weathered

But the details and the colors are superb

This was the last on in the row

Very distinct layers in the sandstone

These are the oldest tombs

No real decorations as the common folk could not afford a mansion in the afterlife

Bassil and I took a detour through come passageways and up to the path to the Royal Tombs

Bassil pointing out the best picture

He was correct!

Working up a bit of a sweat

We were just in the cave below.  Bassil reminded me not to fall into the hole  At this point I realized why Leslie chose the lower route

A four top tomb, no waiting

More tombs across the valley

A tricky hike

From up top it finally sets in how immense this place is

No stairs, no railings

A great big hole in the mountain

As we went along the tombs get more elaborate

Here is the start of the Royal Tombs but I will come back later

The theater holds 3000 people

Across the valley they are just holes

Thsi place was super special

It is the most beautiful cave in all of Petra

Leslie is down there somewhere

Heading down the hill

Now it is starting to look like the set of the Flintstones

The start of the Royal Tombs
