1 Dec 2023 Istanbul: The Spicy Spice Market

We looked up a chicken and yogurt recipe but did not have the required spices.  So off to the spice market we go. It was a 20 minute walk which seemed easy enough but the streets are cobbles and the sidewalks often disappear.  Yesterday when the street we were supposed to take was blocked by a semi-collapsed building, we found that getting from point A to point B is never straight forward.  The walk was enjoyable and we went from mostly empty streets to very busy streets.  The market was bustling and the vendors were only mildly aggressive.  We found a spice shop that was empty and two young women were attending the shop.  So that is the shop we shopped at.  We found our chicken spices, some peri peri pepper spice, some date and walnut treats, a bit of mixed nuts, and some ground cardamon.  Then we shopped at a baklava place where the vendor wanted to add some tea, liquor and some more stuff.  He was just in from Serbia so he was eager to make a bigger sale but we stopped at the Baklava.  Before we went further we stopped for some lunch which was authentic Turkish food.

Kitten playing on the roof again

Laughing dove, not laughing now

Yesterday we could not walk down this street because of a partial building collapse

Today it was completely demolished!  Leslie felt the ground shake early in the morning.  It must have been this building being knocked down.

Gates!

When no one is on the street I am always suspect of the directions
