8 December 2023 Larnaca: A Muddy Stroll Along the Shore of a Salt Flat

We had to get the car at noon so I set and alarm and headed out to the salt flats around 7:30.  It was a short walk to the water but the flats are huge and I walked a total of 3.5 miles in the two hours that I was out.  I saw several kinds of birds along the way.  I got back all muddy but just in time for us to get our breakfast downstairs.

A memorial park

With Howitzers

It says "To the Immortal Greeks Cypress Is Grateful"  This memorial if for the Greeks who were killed or went  missing in 1974 in the war with Turkey over Cyprus

Pink from the salt

A mirror like surface of the water makes it look like a painting

I have happened upon the flamingos

42 in total

Long legs

They are all in a single file

The background is key

The legs look so long

Maximum zoom

Good contrast pink vs. brown

Here there was a bank of grass behind them

So the greens and blues get mixed

I think they are still waking up

One of them is starting to eat

The buildings and trees in the background are making the picture too busy

Eurasian Stonechat

A heron is photobombing

Just trying to blend in

The beak on the heron looks huge

Back to a darker background

Still sleeping

Hooded crow

Armenian gulls

The vegetation on the banks is low scrub

Perfect for the stonechats

This is a female

This is the male

Cypress tree nuts

Lots of snails shells

Something had a nice meal

The gulls

The airport in the distance

The path that offered a different kind of mud to walk through

A big bird hide

No concerts today

Now the reflection is just the cloudy sky

Face off

Stilts

One leg or two

Scratching time

Staring contest

The rule of threes

Odd man out

I wonder what made this track

Two hooded crows and bars on the windows

The Cyprus Civil Defense HQ is here

A boat upon the waves

A building boom in this neighborhood

They look nice

Right next to a beautiful rose
