30 April 2024 Tokyo: A Sushi Lunch as Early Birthday

We have been watching the sushi place across the street for over a week now and we decided that a lunch there would be a fun thing to do.  We were correct, we had a very tasty lunch and Leslie even tried the Sake.  She ordered the "New Born" Sake and seriously enjoyed it.  I ordered a glass of red wine to remove the Sake taste as I was not to my liking.  Happy Birthday a day early!

Just across the street and up these stairs

29 April 2024 Tokyo: Beethoven's 9th Symphony Sith Over 240 People on Stage

We had made several attempts to buy tickets for this performance online, perhaps it was the translation to English, but we were never able to actually get it to work.  So last week, on our first full day here, we headed over to the ticket office and successfully purchased tickets.  It was only 2000 yen, approximately $14 each.  What a bargain!  There were three pieces presented, first Brahms "Akademische Festouverture", second Wagner "Tristan and Isolde" and lastly Beethoven's 9th Symphony.  The choice of pieces slowly brought the audience up to a peak so that by the time the intermission was over we were ready for the 9th symphony.  Perhaps we were more familiar with the last piece but it really was so much better than the other two.  There were at least 83 people in the orchestra, 8 bass, 5 French horns, 1 kettle drum, 1 bass drum, 1 triangle, 1 cymbals, 3 trombones, 3 trumpets, 9 violas, 39 violins, 3 flutes. 3 clarinets, 3 oboes, 3 bassoons for a total of 83 instruments.  One of the flautists also played the piccolo.  The trumpets were German trumpets with rotary valves.  They are played with a hand on each side to the trumpet, like eating a big sub sandwich.  These trumpets were around back in Beethoven's day.  The first two movements were orchestra only but the third one had 160 men and women file onto the stage and sing their hearts out.  The power of their combined voices brought the goose bumps out multiple times.  Wowzers!

On the way over we saw a dance recital

28 April 2024 Tokyo: Yoyoji Park to See the Dogs!

We got all excited when we discovered that we could rent a dog for an hour and take that dog for a walk.  The rental place was right next to Yoyoji Park which has a large dog run.  So thought that we could take the dog over to the park and have a nice walk.  The only issue was a forecast of 84 degrees for the day.  As we were drinking our morning tea we read the reviews for the dog rental and the reviews were not good.  It turns out that these dogs were not too excited to be walking with complete strangers so we decided not to do that part of the day.  Instead we walked through Yoyoji Park and had a delightful time.  There were kids in strollers, kids on bikes, kids walking and running everywhere.  There were dogs in strollers, dogs in backpacks, dogs walking and running everywhere. In the dog walk proper there were three separate areas. There was a large area for large and medium sized dogs, 10 Kg or less.  There was a slightly smaller area for small dogs between 10 and 5 kg and a tiny area for the smallest of dogs.  We must have spent two hours standing around those areas.  We were laughing and pointing and having a blast.  We had the progressive park picnic like last time.  So we stopped in four different places and snacked at each place.   On the way out we saw a group drumming, some folks dancing, a vary loud protest and some aging rock-a-billies.  This park is closer to the center of Tokyo so the density of the people was much higher than it is in Toshima City.  Lots of folks in the station and in the trains.  We hit the seafood section over at Tobu on the walk home and got goodies for dinner.  King Crab, salmon, masago, goat cheese rounded out out dinner.  Yum
