On August 6 1945 the first atomic bomb used in wartime was dropped 600 meters above this building. It was only 160 meters off to the side so this was as direct a hit as you can get. Because the blast wave was directed straight down, the building's center walls were not blown over. Everyone in the building was instantly killed but enough of the iron framework of the dome remained to identify that it was indeed once a dome. The building itself was built in 1915 and was made of steel reinforced concrete, another reason that any amount of this building survived. In its time it was an iconic building, with its riverside location and green dome, it was a local favorite.
It has remained this way since 1945. Some preservation efforts have tried to stabilize the building so it remains the way it looked right after the bomb
It looked fantastic before the bomb
Some call it by its official name the Peace Memorial
It has been a world heritage site since 1996 as a historical witness to the horrors of the use of an atomic bomb
Other folks call it the A-Bomb Dome
It is amazing how much it is intact and how much it is in disarray
