We went to the Harbor Palace then to the Arts and Crafts area where Leslie dropped off a necklace to be repaired. The lady that she bought a necklace from last week said that she could repair it. Then we headed south to the hinterlands, 15 minutes south, towards the Ezousa River. The Harbor Castle was actually a fort and was very spartan. We only paid 5 Euro for both of us to get in and it was over pretty quick. Then we dropped off Leslie's broken Botswana necklace. We still had plenty time so it was off to the river to explore. We never made it to the river as the roads there were just dirt tracks. We did not want to take the rental car on these roads so we parked it at the end of the pavement and walked. We walked past a big earthmover pushing large bits of rock and gravel. We passed a few roadside dumps and when we got to a smoldering pile of trash it was time to abandon the excursion. On the return walk I saw what seemed to be a flock of quail like birds. I hiked a bit around some mounds and then up a bank and found a flock of chukar partridge. Success! We headed back along the coast and only got a little lost. Back at the place we called Viking to firm up some of the upcoming Nile River details.
The Harbor Castle. Built in the 14th century CE and was originally two towers and a large wall. It was enlarged in 1373 by the Genoese who were at war with the Kingdom of Cyprus
The towers collapsed sometime around 1576
The Ottoman rebuilt it an used it as a prison in 1592
The Brits eventually took over and used it to store salt
In 1935 it was recognized as an antiquity and that is what we walked through today
The stone work is great
But nothing from the olden days remained
Up on top we had to share with helicopters
Saw a guy fishing with his dog
Some repairs were obvious
But still in pretty good shape
Massive coastal erosion control
The remains of one of the original towers
Coast guard?
Passegways
The dog is quite cute
Dirt road
Trash pile
Rock piles
The gate to nowhere
Not pretty
A Stonechat
Chukar Partridge
The flock was 6 or 9 birds
I had to climb up this bank to sneak up on them
Back to civilization
Lost a bit
But we are back
Another fine sunset
We will miss this view
