Around the corner from the Treasury is the Street of Facades These are also memorial tombs but they are either less decorated or more deteriorated. Either way these are older and less elaborate. However they were no less interesting. After these Bassil and I took the tricky high trail and Leslie stayed on the main trail. The high trail was tricky without stairs or railings. We entered small and large openings and even climbed out the back of one and then up and over the top of the it. After a half hour we climbed back down and rejoined Leslie. She had been communing with the kitties.
The valley opens up and we have reached the Street of facades
Very tall with a minimal opening It looks as if there is more to is that is still underground
The colors of the sandstone are quite nice
The pigeons have taken up home in the old water delivery system
The folks that are taking a break show how large this tomb is
This would be for an entire family
This one was carved on all three sides
It did not fare well and is very weathered
But the details and the colors are superb
This was the last on in the row
Very distinct layers in the sandstone
These are the oldest tombs
No real decorations as the common folk could not afford a mansion in the afterlife
Bassil and I took a detour through come passageways and up to the path to the Royal Tombs
Bassil pointing out the best picture
He was correct!
Working up a bit of a sweat
We were just in the cave below. Bassil reminded me not to fall into the hole At this point I realized why Leslie chose the lower route
A four top tomb, no waiting
More tombs across the valley
A tricky hike
From up top it finally sets in how immense this place is
No stairs, no railings
A great big hole in the mountain
As we went along the tombs get more elaborate
Here is the start of the Royal Tombs but I will come back later
The theater holds 3000 people
Across the valley they are just holes
Thsi place was super special
It is the most beautiful cave in all of Petra
Leslie is down there somewhere
Heading down the hill
Now it is starting to look like the set of the Flintstones
The start of the Royal Tombs
Take a left at the mule
It has been 1 year and 205 days since we began our migration
