5 May 2026 Mayfield Kentucky: One Last Road Trip with WD and Vera

We jumped in the car, left the AirBnB and hit the highway.  It was a three hour plus drive and we only stopped twice.  Once for gas and once for a side of the road stretch where we just happened to see cliff swallows grabbing mud from a puddle.  We drove over the Ohio River on the skinniest  bridge I have seen in a long time, we were well over 100 feet above the river.  We made it to Mayfield KY to Leslie's cousins Norma and Jerry.  They greeted us warmly and we had a bite of lunch.  Then we all piled into Jerry's car and drove over to Harmony Church.  Ir seemed to take a while to get there and that gave us time to talk about family and mostly about Vera and WD.  Upon our arrival we gathered around Vera and WD's grave stones.  There we placed the ashes into holes that Jerry and Norma were able to have pre-dug for this occasion.  Larry led everyone in a prayer and we interred the ashes. We sure miss these two lovely souls.

The Ohio is also full of water, just slightly less muddy

We bought a celebratory pot of flowers for Vera na WD

A small town but doing much better than Cairo

When Jerry and Norma asked us what we wanted to drink, I said Kentucky bourbon, there was no shortage of choices

We drove through Mayfield that had been devastated by a tornado but there was Lots of new construction

But in many places there was  just a foundation left

We hade it to the cemetery

Old gravesites

Vera and WD had headstones and Leslie arranged to get holes dug for the ashes

Lots of Leips here

Larry placed Verand I placed WD into the holes and we all said a prayer

Then we filled the holes

Driving back it seems more rural
