31 December 2024 Brisbane: A Pops Concert and Fireworks

The Queensland Pops Orchestra has been performing for 40 years and the anniversary concert was set for New Year Eve.  We dressed up in our fancy clothes and headed out for the 5:00 concert.  The program was wide ranging.  There were songs where we were invited to sing along..."I could have danced all night."  There were compositions by pop stars, Freddy Mercury's "Barcelona" and a song by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Uleavus (from ABBA), "Anthem."  Several classical pieces by Strauss and Puccini were intermingled by show tunes from Jekyll and Hyde and My Fair Lady.  It finished up with a Scottish song from 1605, one by Andrea Bocelli "Time To Say Goodbye" and "Auld Lang Syne" to wrap it all up.  The concert let out just before the fireworks over the Brisbane River started.  These fireworks started at 7:45 PM ostensibly for the kiddos to be able to watch.  We left the concert and set up shop right on the steps of the performing arts building. It worked out for us, we could watch them  before our bedtime and then head home for grilled cheese sandwiches.

Our chariot awaits

Folks are already headed into the riverside area to watch the fireworks

It is a packed house

Sparkly

At first I thought this was the living statue.  He was absolutely still and off in a corner

The hall is quite elegant

Huge chandelier

A sea of gray hair

Except for us!

The pipes of the organ are ghostly

The players filter in

A round of applause and the show starts

A dozen vocalists start the show with the song We Are Australian with a digeridoo solo

When absorbing the enormity of this kind of production I always try to count up the number of performers

12 vocalists, 40 string instruments on the floor, 14 horns and 5 folks bouncing around an array of percussion instruments.  In addition two soloists singing a half dozen different selections, one bagpiper accompanied by four highland dancers and a string quartet.

The conductor was a hoot.  He told a few jokes, pantomimed getting a drink at the intermission and kept the show moving

The bagpiper and the highland dancers

A string quartet

More bagpipes

The vocal crew came back out to wrap it up.  What a great show!

Two main areas of fireworks were synchronized

We were able to see the taller bursts

This tree blocked the lower altitude displays

But sometimes we could still see through the tree

Looking down river

Whooo hooo!

By the time the finale came the smoke was very thick

Happy New Year!

25 December 2024 Brisbane: Cooking, Walking and Sappy Christmas Movie Watching

Our Christmas day started with a sneaky gift to Leslie.  I was able to buy a pair of dog socks and a card on the one day that I was out without her.  I kept the secret for two weeks and surprised her Christmas morning.  We had the day planned out and put the turkey into a brine right after our breakfast.  It was not completely thawed so the brine was going to help with that.  The turkey would be going into the oven at 3:30 and cook for 2.5 hours and we will have our dinner.  It was a tiny turkey, only 6 pounds but just big enough for us.  One slight problem we had was with the oven's temperature controls.  The only temperature that mas still marked on the knob was 250 C.  We needed to cook the turkey at 180 C so I had to estimate where 180 degrees was on the dial.   We slid the turkey in and decided to take a walk on this very fine day.  It was so nice that we were out for an hour and a quarter.  We got back to the smell of a very crispy turkey.  Apparently my guess at the temperature was way off so the turkey was already overdone on the top and undone on the bottom.  Fast forward to 7 PM and we had a lovely dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing balls and Swiss chard.  The top part of the turkey required extra chewing but the gravy and everything else we had a fine Christmas dinner.

Zero, 250 and grill are all clearly marked.  No real idea what the lower settings say

We has a box of chocolates on our outside gate

Thanks Adrian and Lisa

21 December 2024 Brisbane: Dogs at the New Farm Market and a Fun Happy Hour

We went to the New Farm Park for the Farmers Market.  On the way, there were lots of birds along the river.  I took a few pictures of them as we walked.  At the market we saw lots of dogs so I took pictures of them too.  We headed back with our fruit and vegetables and got ready for our happy hour with Adrian and Lisa.  These folks are our neighbors who have been so very friendly and welcoming.  They have a fantastic apartment decorated with First Nations Aboriginal art pieces.  Lisa had worked with that community for years and much of her collection was gifted to her.  Adrian has just turned 65 and recently had a party at their place.  At the party one of his gifts was a bottle of gin specifically mixed for him and called Uncle Hat.  Uncle Hat is his nickname given to him by his nephew who lives here in Brisbane.  They have a fantastic attitude which is positive and open.  We fit right in with that energy.  Our happy hour turned into two, then three and finally around 9:30 we called it a night.  This was a fantastic experience and a super fun night for us both!
