Seymour Island

Seymour island is mostly flat. It is home to frigate birds and blue boobies as well as lava lizards, land iguanas, sea iguanas sea lions and Sally lightfoot crabs. They were some fabulous waves breaking offshore but they were not surfable. We stayed on the path which wound along the coast and then cut through the center of the island. The land iguanas have been transplanted there from baltra where they built the air base. The airbase disrupted their environment so much that they were dying out on Baltra. So folks transplanted some iguanas onto Seymour where they thrived. These iguanas were used to repopulate several other Islands. Once those islands are all settled the remaining land iguanas will be removed from Seymour because they are not native to that Island. The blue footed boobies have not had a chick come to adulthood in the last 6 years. Their population has been hit really hard by a decrease in the sardines that they would feed their young. However this year it looks like there are several young that are going to make it! There are two different types of frigatebirds the Great frigatebird and the Magnificent frigatebird. As our guide said they did not name themselves they are merely the largest and second largest of all the freaking birds in existence.  Magnificent frigate bird is found only in the Galapagos and in the Caribbean.
