10 August 2024 Tulsa: A Tour of the Church Recording Studio and Leon Russel Museum

Tulsa is Music.  Leon Russel had his own studio there.  Tom Petty was discovered and signed to his first record contract across the street.  Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Woodie Guthrie also had Tulsa periods in their careers.  We took a tour of the Church Studios and saw a piece of art that Ray made as well as displays that were made at the Discovery Lab.  A great time looking at all the memorabilia all the while getting jabs thrown at me by the  guide.

Leon is a bit stiff today

Heading into the studio

It is set up in an old Church

The mixer board

The original sanctuary space

Ray made this piece and he told us how difficult it was to install.  Hanging, leveling and making sure all the strings were not tangled

It shows the Church when you look at it straight on

Leon had MS so he used a cane

This tour guide decided to make me the butt of all of his jokes.  They were mostly stoner jokes and Ray even said that it was making him uncomfortable.  I held my own and zapped him back a few times

Lights

Across the street

So many murals

Here is the recording space.  This is John Fogerty's piano.  Fogerty is from the band CCR

Up in the tower where photography is not allowed.  Willie Nelson is pictured to the right and an anecdote was told to us.  Willie was leaving Nashville for Oklahoma and his house started on fire.  He ran in to save his guitar and guitar case.  The guitar was special and was called Trigger.  The guitar was special because it was filled with all his weed.  This was cause to make fun of me...again!

Our guide did not tell us no photos before all these were taken

Eric Clapton got arrested when he left the plane in Tulsa.  That is why there are bars behind him

Makes perfect sense
