16 October 2025 Cullera: A Nightmare Return Trip

We bid our farewells and walked to the seemingly calm train station.  Once we entered the station, things turned very different.  Large groups of people were gathered around the monitors with pained expressions.  We had a local train to Cullera and not a regional train so we thought we might be in the clear, but they were all messed up.  We found out later in the day that there was a problem with one of the trains along a section of track that has only one rail line.  So all sorts and all directions of trains were delayed.  When our train finally showed a gate we ran over to get to the track.  When we arrived, the train was already full and we basically had to push our way onto the train and find a place to stand.  We stood for 20 to 30 minutes without the train moving and I eventually nudged a young man and asked him to give Leslie his seat.  He proceeded to make out with his girlfriend from a standing position.  When we finally got moving, it was not for long, we had to stop for another 15 minutes at the next station.  We had entered the single line bottleneck of track.  By the time we got moving, once again we stopped for a long time. After standing around an announcement came on and everyone started leaving the train. Once everyone left the train, we stood on the thin concrete strip between two gates for an additional 20 minutes. A new train arrived but it was already full.  As we tried to board, there was pushing and a scramble to get onto this one.  By now we are over two hours of traveling and had only traveled 20 km of our 30 km trip.  A kindly English speaking man explained all the trouble and told us we only had two more stops and we would be back at the place.  However as we exited the station we see the line for the bus!  What a day of travel!  There was a movie shoot going on at the beach when we finally got home.

A fun sign seen on our leisurely stroll to the train station

Everything seems normal

But inside it is chaos

The first train was crowded

Two hours into this trip and we are less then halfway

These are ruins of homes devastated by the deadly floods from last year

Now what?  Everyone has to get off the train and get on another train.  After a 15 minute wait it got a bit ugly with pushing and shoving to get on the next train

This train arrived already filled with passengers and now it is really packed.  Only two more stops, thank god!

Hang on tight

Finally we are at the Cullera station

A long line for the bus

Very crowded but we got seats!
