The Bear and Billet has been around for a long time. The building was erected in 1664 to relace the old townhouse of the Sergeants of the Bridge. That townhouse was burned down during the Civil War in the 1500's. It is graded category 1 historical by the British Trust. The old timbers on the ceiling gave this lively pub a classic old pub feel. We were early so we sat in the drinking section and had some new Gins. One gin was named Peaky Blinders after the long running British TV show about a crime family in the 1900's. The GnT was so good it could have been a crime. We were enjoying our roasts and we realized that it was only one week earlier that we had a different Sunday roast in Cams Mill. This roast was so much better here that there really was no comparison. After eating we decided to walk back as uber is basically non-responsive. It was only one mile but with the wind and a light drizzle it was not optimal. We passed through the city center and the racetrack on our way back Once we were back at he AirBnB we puttered about some and prepared to leave by 10 then next morning.
Approaching the pub
Ta da!
Through the arch and into the pub, its a Sunday Roast for us
One last selfie
Our bartender mixed up a wicked drink. Each GnT was garnished with juniper berries and citrus
Your landlord's beer
The vase flower and bird are all carved from wood
Simple and easy to decide, beef for Leslie and pork for me
The very old bridge when it was only the old bridge
I snapped this during a brief lull in the business
Old timbers on the ceiling
Wooden beams with tiny tables build into them
We opted for a couch and a larger table
Peaky Blinders and masons, two different fraternal organizations
Finishing up our quads of new gins these are 104 - 107 in the gin book
Yikes!
Our drinks to enjoy with dinner
#7 is reserved only for us
The Yorkshire pudding on top really make these dishes impressive
It is a puff pastry that is hollow and good for sopping up the fabulous gravy
Also on the plat were carrots and a whole parsnip
As well as roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes and a ball of stuffing
Upstairs was even nicer!
The plaque!
We decided to walk back even though it looked threatening
It was only one mile and we had dinner to work off
Many half timbered buildings in Chester
A bit cloudy and spots of rain started to fall
I thought it may be Lady Gaga in disguise, but no, it was not
Walking past the racetrack
Almost home
