We had to walk to the Stadium of Lights to get on the metro which took us to Newcastle. The we switched over to the train system to get to Durham. Our train was supposed to depart at platform #3 but it was flashing which means it is subject to change. #3 was across the majority of the tracks over an walkway so we waited to cross over until it was closer to the departure time. When there were only a few minutes left we crossed over but were not able to get all the way there before there was a platform change. Now we had to navigate over the pedestrian bridge while all the passengers now had to cross over. No worries, Durham is only a 12 minute ride. Durham is delightful from the train station to the downtown to the cathedral and the castle. We walked over a few different bridges, stocked up on tea and gin, had a delightful lunch while watching the parade of folks saunter by. We also visited the Cathedral and craned our necks way up to see all the decorative murals, woodwork, stained glass, icons and shrines. We returned back down hill but took a taxi to the train station instead of the hill climb we would have had had we been on foot.
We are in Newcastle for the train
A fine train station
A busy bridge scene
Five Bridges!
Newcastle is big
Fancy train station in Durham
Let the day begin
High on the hill
The Wear River is flows out to Sunderland
So much beauty
Keeping it clean
Central square
Knute the King came here in 1027
More recent wars
It is a mighty old town
Market
With lots of stalls
Two rascally puppies
A good crowd on a nice day
The houses seemingly thrown together
But no rain in sight
Comfortable?
The Tin of Sardines was so small we could not fit inside
Across the street was much nicer and the food was great
A pretty natural riverbank
Don't forget the gin
Cake vs Reality
A fine hat to ride into war wearing
Tea Shop!!!
Our tea supplies have been replenished
Oh my and a gin store too
We are liking Durham even more, stocking up on the Navy Strength
Now I am curious
The river walk straight ahead the cathedral climb to the left
Passing the castle walls
Old tree with massive roots
Rapunzel anyone?
On top of the hill is the cathedral
It is big
Clearly it is quite old
and is adorned with beautiful items
Dali would love this wood block print
Big doors
Everything is extra large, these columns are8 to 10 feet in diameter
Vaulted ceiling
Very open
Elizabeth 1 Coat of Arms
Nive work
Very funky brick work
Arches forever
The big organ
The middle organ
The little organ
Elaborate carvings
Arches on top of arches
Fine details everywhere
Timbered ceilings
Huge stone artifacts
Intricately carved
A cherub and a patched wall
From the interior
A bit of art displayed
These were really impressive
The tallest part of the whole building
Really a nice place
Light a candle
But be quick because they are moving the pews away
The clock is correct
A fancy side temple
Some repairs are needed
Let the sun shine in
A nice bit of natural material used as art
With metal inlay
And another piece incorporating metal
A more modern stain glass peeking through
Glass making?
Vis Vinta indeed
The center top most ceiling
Great on a sunny day
The biggest stained glass window in the cathedral
Different finishes on each vertical column
The castle is also on the hill
Nice planted border
The castle walls
This would be a nice spot for lunch
Mustang Wedding
AI could also write it for you
Our taxi ride back to the train station
A bit of a wait for the return train
