The first night in a new place is always a bit difficult. Where is the bathroom? What temperature should we set the heat/cooling? Mundane kinds of things, but this morning there was a odd wake up call. A rumbling and a repetitive booming sound off in the distance. My new alarm clock is an excavator right across the street working on the pier. I will have to add that to my list of site specific alarm clocks. It was 8:30 when I woke up so I was able to get a decent amount of sleep. Leslie had her own alarm clock in the form of construction going on in the apartment building behind ours. Once we had our breakfast and tea we had a nice 3 mile walk. There is a very long promenade along the water and it is just across the street from our stay. We headed in towards the center of the town, past churches, a fort, municipal sports facilities for tennis, swimming and roller blading. We came upon groupings of clear large trash bags bursting with plastic bottles. After seeing several of these we saw a pair of young men collecting the trash. We clapped to get their attention and them gave them the thumbs up!
It reminded me of my never ending trash collection back in Hollywood and how nice it was to have folks honk and give me the thumbs up too. We took a different path back to the house and we stopped for fresh veggies and some flowers along the way. Later we headed to the store using our spare suitcase as a shopping trolly.
