The Blue Grotto is on the other side of the island and we hit the Uber jackpot when we booked this driver. Our driver was in a six person van and it was a smooth ride over to the grotto. There are small 6 -8 person boats that are for hire at the base of the cliffs. For only 10 euros a piece we were packed into a boat and taken to several caves and grottos. These places are special because they had the specific geometry between the limestone rich water, the sun and the sandy bottom to allow the refracted water to glow with an eerie blue. if the winds are too strong they do not offer the boats. These little craft would take a pounding from the waves and it would be dangerous to go into the caves. Luckily for us we planned correctly and had a glorious excursion.
The bird sanctuary just off shore
Heading down to the little boats
It is a rugged coastline
The waves are calm
Sea cave #1
In we go
The blue colors are already evident
Sand on the bottom accentuates the color
Purple algae
A large overhang
A beautiful ride
These initial caves are rather small
A smaller cave with green on the walls
More algae
Green on the wall
A longer cave
Nicely framed
The outline of the cave looks like a wolf
Another fantastic sunny day
We are in a deep canyon
A huge natural arch
In we go
Looking back
An electric blue patch
Glowing brightly
We keep on chugging along
An intense stripe
Need the sunglasses to look at this one
Very pretty
The sun is really cooperating
Thanks to the sun for this
Pigeon!
Sometimes the color is more green than blue
Around another bend
We are part of a continuous boat parade
Bunching up here, we wait our turn
A squared off cave
A window to the outside
The brightest blue of the day
So beautiful
Way up on the hill, at first we thought it was a bride and groom
Heading back
Very enjoyable
Heading out to visit the neolithic temple
