The Amalfi Coast's namesake is the tiny town of Amalfi, nestled in between towering rock faces. This rugged area is not serviced by trains and the road access it a roller coaster ride. So we took the ferry from Salerno to Amalfi. It was a quick 40 minute ride with stunning views on calm seas. We have had spotty success with the busses here. Sometimes they are late and sometimes they don't arrive at all. So we walked the 1.5 miles along promenade instead. We found it delightful to see the grandparents pushing prams along with their little grandbabies inside. It must have been prime time for walking as we passed 8 or 9 of them on our way. We arrived at the ferry terminal in time for the 11:10 departure but our tickets were for 11:40. We could have gotten on early but the line was long and we wanted to get a seat on the top floor. As it was, the wait was most entertaining. We saw folks with dogs, families with luggage, people that were late and running to catch the boat and people that were booked on a different ferry worried that they were about to miss the boat. Great fun!
We have reached the port
Better views of the castle on the hill
Big beagle
The waterfront where the sail boats are levitating
rowers, boats in the water and boats up on drydocks
A smooth ride
The terrain requires many viaducts
Old fortifications
The 11:10 ferry
Smaller boats were constantly moving about
The gateway to the Amalfi coast
We were in the front of the line for the 11:40
It was a larger boat
A massive rock quarry
Off we go!
Perched on the side of the cliff
We visited this town a few days back
More mountains in the distance
All along the coast we saw buildings
Reuse what you have
Looking back at Salerno
The mountains reach right to the water
Blending in
Some sea caves
The road can bee seen on the left
Rocking!
The Amalfi Coast proper
A lovely sunny day
Way up on the top of the hill
The geography dwarfs the architecture
Several of these smaller towns are on our list of places to explore
We are almost there
It is Amalfi
The church tower
Way up top is another town
Grand columns
Build where you can and make stairs tot he next flat spot
The waterfront has many nice hotels
Pastel colors go together nicely
This is half of the town, it was too spread out to get all of it in one shot
There are many bridges to support the roads
An odd shaped building really sticking out
Big cliffs
Buildings hanging on the side to the hills
The far view
Getting closer
We are pulling into the harbor
An old fort
Following the ravines
Let the docking process commence
A tower on top
Steep sides
Who hoo!
We have docked
Let the jostling begin
