10 October 2022 Botswana Eagle Island Lodge: Blood Moon Lion Feast

The opening picture here is a warning for the squeamish reader.  There are pictures that are actually in focus that show a fresh lion kill.  So if you don't want to see this type of thing you should skip this post.  It is actually going to be links to the videos that we took.

We saw the moon peeking out from the tree line and stopped the vehicle so we could watch it rise.  It was a deep red and we all remarked as to how unusual that was

We watched it for a short while and it seemed to be full.  We started back to the lodge and Isaac got a call on the radio.  There was a lion kill right in front of the lodge.  On our drive back we saw three lions across the river moving fast.  I saw one leap 10 feet in the air.

We arrived and there were two lionesses eating on a red lechwe

They were really working on the carcass

It was messy but systematic but soon the other three lions came to the kill and things got chaotic.  There was snarling and pushing.  Before long one lion left with the head and then another ran off with the spine.  It could not have taken longer than 10 minutes but it certainly seemed to take a long time.  After it was all over we drove over to where another lion kill where the carcass was mostly intact.  All that fighting a few yards away and here was a feast with only one big cat in attendance.

The following are links to videos I took on my phone

It had been 128 Days since we began our migration
