24 January 2023 Kaikoura: A Dusky Dolphin Overload

Dusky Dolphins are plentiful here and they come in large pods.  The pod we visited had 300 members or more.  There were many acrobatic displays.  Side slapping, end over end flips and jumps with double spins.  We would go from one side of the viewing platform to the other side and see masses dolphins everywhere.  This was a exhilarating experience.  The markings on the Dusky make them look like they are smiling so we smiled back.  There were baby dolphins swimming right next to their moms.  We were able to watch them for 15 minutes or more, but it seemed like an hour.  Of course the boat was rocking but that added an element of fun as well.  The rocking boat made the videos shaky as the boat was never stable.  At one point Leslie grabbed me from behind to stabilize herself.  It was like we were on a motorcycle and we were having so much fun!  Hanging on for dear life while laughing and smiling was a great moment!

Ready to launch in synchronized swimming

Look Ma, I am flying!

They have the cute smile

Chopping thru the water

Straight down to the side of the baot

The one at the top of the picture had a bite taken out of him!

Blowing bubbles

The markings of an adult

A tiny young one

Hi buddy!

They all want to get a look at us

Zooming in close showed the dolphin's personality but the far view showed just how many were there

The gang is all here

Imagine this density of dolphins on both sides of the boat as well as in the front

Babies

How they don't all bump into each other is amazing

We were pretty close to shore

Looking out to our next encounter

It has been 233 days since we began our Migration
