29 January 2023 Christchurch: Jazz in the Park

The music lovers of Christchurch turned out for this Jazz Concert in the Botanic Gardens.  We got there early and scored one of only six park benches on "the lawn".  Lots of folks had chairs but many were just down on the ground.  The band was TigerMoth and they played Jazz.  Their repertoire included Post-Modern Jazz, Pre-Modern Jazz and some Modern Jazz to mix it up.  The sang
tunes by the Eurythmics, Elton John, Ella Fitzgerald, Backstreet Boys, Louis Armstrong and Rodger Miller.  Actually the Rodger Miller was a funny take on the "King of the Road" song with different lyrics "King of Trombone"  The band had us singing along and tapping our toes. After the sound check we still had some time so I took this chance to zip over to the magnetic observatory and got a bit lost on my way back.  No worries I got back to the bench and chased off the interlopers.  We loved the arrangements and the band really played well together.

A quick sound check

Everything checks out so time for some more walking about the gardens

This stump was as big as the building behind it

A vanishing staircase, off to infinity

It was in the middle of a lake so no one could walk on it

We have a list, actually a spreadsheet...

Ernest Shackleton, a bit worse for wear in this photo, stopped here for a calibration before heading to the Antarctic

Some sort of Rugby podium.  You can see the wickets down lower

Only 22 in the world and cast from coins donated by UN members

Gong goes the bell

The older crowd really showed up, maybe because it was free

Maybe because it was Jazz

Our bench was a bit in the trees

Lots of cute little ones

We had to stop and laugh at these guys who had no clue what they were doing
