A country wide tradition of celebrating the end of High School is happening all around us. First there is the traditional graduate's hat the studenterhue. This is a sailors hat and the graduates will wear it non-stop for two or three weeks. This will garner congratulations from the people they meet as well as discounts and special features. Then comes the studenterkorsel, a drunken ride in a huge military truck. This truck takes all the kids to each other's homes for a celebratory drink. The Danish drinking age is 16 for anything less than 18%. So these kids already know how to drink and they will party all night. There is a long list of traditions that go with the hat. the score of your final exam gets written inside the cap. If you make it till dawn you can cut a triangle shaped notch from the sweatband and if you swim naked with the hat on you can add a wave to the hat. a square shaped notch in the sweatband means 24 drinks in 24 hours, a notch in the sun shade means those drinks did not stay down and if the entire sun shade is torn off the drinker needed a stomach pump. A heart shaped cut in the band means sex with your current partner but with the hat on and a lightning bolt is sex with someone new, also with the hat on.
