15 August 2023 Sunderland: A Jaunt Through the Mere Knowles Cemetary

We walked to the Spa together and Leslie stayed for a treatment while I continued on through a large cemetery.  The cemetery is called the Mere Knowles and it was founded in 1856 and it spreads over 42 acres,  The north west corner was flooded due to the drenching rain the day earlier.  So many very ornate graves were spread across this area as well as two bricked up chapels.  There were military graves from WW1 and WW2.  There were paths that led out of the cemetery to a wooded area that was home to some interesting birds.  Three new birds made it to the list, Eurasian Wren, Common Chiff Chaff and Willow Warbler.  Each new bird was identified by the Merlin Sound Identifier.  A few months ago our guide lumbed these types of birds into one category, LBJ, little brown jumpers.  I reached  the end of the cemetery and walked into Seaburn to meet Leslie at the grocery for some shopping.

Some sturdy iron gates

That I passed along the way

The green grass was happy for the recent rain

WW2 graves with a carving of the insignia of the branch of the military that each soldier was a part of

In the older section the graves ar more ornate

In the older section

Some graves had raised borders that acted as planters for flowers

The oldest section was a bit overgrown at the moment

Pigeons all lined up

Spooky

The soil must be unstable as many headstones were leaning

The red bricks in the windows show how this place had been clodes up

This grave is solid
