29 August 2023 York: Our First Set of Wall walking

We hopped off of the HoHo and crossed the street to get to the City Walls.   We climbed up to the top of the steps and arrived at the top of the City Walls.  There was a room there that had the portcullis, that gate thing that gets dropped down to close off access through the gate. After that we walked along the top of the walls, looking over at lawns, houses, champagne gardens and the huge ditch where the moat once was.  It was sunny and still warm and we had a great time.

The wind is blowing us a bit

This plaque commemorates the site of a Roman fortification circa 300 CE

The stone steps leading up to the top of the walls are worn down in the center of the steps

Hi, how are you.

An anti-pigeon gate

The portcullis was lowered back iin early 2000's but it got stuck in the ground and has not been lowered since

Pretty roomy up here

The Minster towers behind us

Sweet pea!

There was a spire planned for the tower to the left.  It was not built as it probable would have caused this tower to collapse.  It still took some 240 years to complete

The towers that were built are still quite something to see

Looking over the walls

Not sure what  this stone tower is

We thought about heading down to get a glass of bubbly but opted to continue our sunny wall walk
