8 November 2024 Dimakya Island: A Return to Eagle's Point

After my disappointing walk up to the Eagle's Point a few days ago, I decided to return today after breakfast.  Previously the guide told me that the had seen a Philippine Megapode on our hike so I reviewed the details of this bird and went back to give it a better try.  I am glad that I did because I was able to catch a quick glimpse of this odd bird.  I had heard of them before, they lay their eggs in volcanic soil so that the warmth of the soil will incubate the eggs.  These specific megapodes make a mulch pile that provides the warmth.  I also saw a barred rail on the trail to make it two lifebirds for the day.  We pooled, lunched at Sinag and got to talk with Rick the executive chef.  What a life story he has.  It would make a good episode of Chef's Table.  We went back to the room to get ready to leave tomorrow.  Then we watched the sunset and had more of the great food at Sinag.  We had send out our clothes to get laundered and by 9 PM they still had not been delivered.  Of course as soon as we began to panic there was a knock on the door and there they were.  We will have fresh clothes to wear to Manila.

Rick is a superstar with an incredible back story.  He has lived in Guam, Las Vegas, Louisiana, Japan, Korea, Italy and the Philippines all in search of great dishes and the stories that those dishes tell.
