Tivoli Dreams is a new ballet that draws inspiration from the 1915 Danish Classic, Dream Pictures. It has been re-thought with new dances and music from Hans Christian Lumby, not in the original ballet. In this version a young man from today's timeframe is invited up on stage to meet with Columbine, Harlequin and Hans Christian Lumby himself. The story plays out as the young man is introduced to Columbine. She communicated with him using hand gestures and body language. It is the Pantomime Stage after all. Then more dancers are introduces in pairs. First is the composer Lumby and his partner wearing green, then the pair of harlequins in their bright checkerboard costumes. The next characters are a couple in yellow perhaps from Bavaria, a couple in red from the steppes of Eastern Europe, a couple of flamenco dancers from Spain and finally Mr. Moneybags and the Fairy Queen. One dance follows Mr. Moneybags as he lures the female harlequin away, first with flowers and later with cash money. This leaves the male harlequin alone so he hooks up with the fairy queen. Both harlequins see the error in their ways and end up setting up Mr. Moneybags and Fairy Queen. The couple from Spain were a comedy act. She was a large woman and he as a tiny man, too tiny to lift her up like the other dancers had done with their partners. The dancing was great entertainment and when it was over we strolled around the flower beds. We came upon the Friday Rock and Roll concert by Ankerstjerne singing and rapping in Danish.
