We woke up in our enchanted forest to the sounds of
songbirds. They were so delightful that
we drank our tea and ate our breakfast on the deck listening to their
songs. Some of the loudest and most
elaborate birdsong came from the smallest birds. The forest is mostly peaceful and so we can
pick out individual calls and see the birds flit here and there. We drove to the east side of the island and
drove to the top of Constitution Mountain.
It is the second tallest mountain on a coastal island in the lower 48, a
very specific criteria to be sure. It
was a very clear day and both Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier were visible. This
is not an everyday occurrence on Orcas. The drive is just under 5 miles and it's all uphill. We saw a dozen or more bicyclists trudging up the non stop climb. This was impressive.
