We took a walk along the Avenue Liberdade before the rain was due to hit. It was a good thing we did because there was only a smattering of drops as we started but then the sun came out and it was delightful. We walked to the end of the avenue where the statue of Sebastian Melo, the Marquis de Pombal, stands. Then we continued a bit up the hill until we could see the water off in the distance. There were fantastic buildings all along the Avenue Liberdade and trees lining the center walkway. This is very trendy and the most exclusive shops lined the avenue, Rolex, Hugo Boss, . We stopped in and got our metro cards so we will be ready to use all sorts of public transportation. Then we headed back for lunch and were snug inside when the hard rains came.
So beautiful! These stone mosaic designs everywhere
The Avenue Liberdade is tree lined and elegant
Narrow old streets
A WW1 memorial
The bronze section of discarded wartime paraphernalia was very poignant
The other side of the memorial
Lots of pastel colors
Sculpture and art is everywhere
Many statues of bearded men
And stern individuals
Sebastian Melo helped rebuild Portugal after the 1755 earthquake
He is considered to be one of the most influential men on Lisbon's history
So he gets a very impressive statue
A great mosaic on the ground in front of the statue
The birds were very comical
These folks were ten feet tall
The head of this giant was five feet tall
The Kraken!
Crawling out of the rubble of the earthquake
Some bronze sections to boot
Sebastian way up on top
All of the sidewalks had the white and black mosaics with 2 inch square blocks of stones
Blackbird
Big covered athletic areas
Impressive gateway
So much going on with this building, the balconies, the grates on the windows and a stained glass above the doorway
Another fine gate
So many great balconies
Another grand place
My kind of spicy!
Tile work extravaganza
It is not a cat house, its a cat condo!
This cat is taking shelter
Because here comes the rain
Rain right into this house
More on the way
Everything looked a little nicer after the rain
