17 May 2025 Bologna: The Secret Gardens Part 1

A week ago we went to the flower festival in the park and when I went to the interweb to find out the name of the festival I discovered "The Secret Garden" tour.  Leslie investigated it further and discovered that this is a tour of the gardens in the centers of the palazzos around town.  There were 20 or so gardens open to tour and we got to eleven.  This was fun as it took us to parts of town that we had never been to.

Impromptu markets pop up on the weekends

Just keep walking

At first I thought this was a big sausage but is a carved piece of wood

A fancy bed!

Our first garden was at the music museum

Each location will have information about the site

Behind the bananas was a large fresco

Super ornate portico

Large statues holding up the entrance to a building

Yet another bell tower

The entrances to the gardens were always a bit mysterious

There was a large amount of variability

This was a very large area with sculptures

And mature trees

Of various types.  There was an official volunteer cataloging the types of trees found here

A big wall surrounded the space

We could see the bell tower from the garden

Off to another garden

Each time we had to show out tickets

This garden had more flowers than the others

Roses at that

A planted bird bath

Some are hanging in the out building

Some chairs set up

We found out that this garden was part of an arts organization and this years winner had art on display

Finding inspiration on wash day

Yes we did stop to smell them

They smelled as good as they looked

Very well kept

A huge apricot tree

The Italian version of throwing a pair of tennis shoes up on the power line.  Instead these fancy leather pumps are handing from a power line

This old door, for forty four, don't come knocking you old bore...

Garden #3

Smaller potted flowers

But a dense jungle

Pops with poppies coming out of his head

In each garden the birds were singing their little heads off

A birds nest!

Froggy

This looked like a hops plant

At first I thought it was an orchid

Cats and dogs

I was trying to catch the bright green trainers that the priest was wearing

Back on the search for another garden

Keeping cool under the porticos

Love the color scheme

The buildings are really kept up and look nice

Entering another one

Garden #4

A larger area that used to house stables

A fountain with running water but not many flowers

Iron work up on a balcony

Concrete pillars

Gate and grille on the window

Garden #5

Nice trees

Black bird singing

heading to Garden #6

An oddly shaped leaf

This garden had a Nonna selling goodies

An apple tart!

Antient door

Oh the sweet sweet scent

The gardens are growing up the building
