22 May 2025 Bologna: Lunch and the Town Hall

We had a delightful lunch at Cesari restaurant.  The downstairs dining room was pretty small but the upstairs must have been big as group after group filed up there .  I ordered the pigs head sausage on a lark and although it was not pleasing to the eye, it did land nicely on the pallet.  Laura continued her pasta tour and Leslie got a ravioli dish.  We finished up with a trio of desserts where the pannacotta was the star.  On our way out we peeked inside the Theatro Anatomico courtyard.  We returned to the main square and took the tour of the City Hall.  Another delight of renaissance painting, decoration and furnishing.

Unassuming exterior

Hail to the Ceasari

Pigs head sausage

The queen of grappa

A pasta Bonaganese

Spinach ravioli

Great grating

Dessert for three

Never lacking in embellishments

The Teatro Anatomica was located in the Archiginasio Palace

The actual theater was used to show dissections and operations

It was located upstairs but there was a conference going on at the time

So we toured the ground floor courtyard

A gallery of alcoves each dedicated to scholars of old

With memorials and coats of arms

It was stunning in the details

Each fancier than the last

Some a bit worn

Some looking new

We did not find the elevator until after we took these stairs

Many large sculptures in the first main hall

Scene after scene was painted on the walls and ceiling

There must have been hoards of painters working here

Huge bronze

Lookin out at the hall

The interior courtyard

A six foot tall lanern

Religious works were here

Alegorical paintings

A pope or two

Bologna had its share of Popes, at least seven

Panels on the ceiling

Another beautiful room

Getting away from the religious to the humanistic paintings of the renaissance

Into the main hall of the museum

Delicate marbles

Elaborate metal pieces

Life sized marble

A veritable warehouse of paintings

Of course the ceilings were not neglected

This must have been a great dog

Getting in some birdwatching

My neck is feeling the pain

The mastery of perspective on the  ceiling keeps me looking up

The importance of stretching

Duck duck goose

Another dog

The sheer volume of works here is astounding

Large scale oil paintings

Touch of common themes, Venus and the clam shell

This made me think of a choregraphed dance scene

Old city scapes

Coats of arms by the hundreds

A tiny glass dog

Some modern art on the way out
