Within the grounds of the gardens were two smaller palaces, the Grand Trion and the Petite Trion. The Grand Trion was styled as an Italian Piazza with pink marble and porphyry. It was a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the main palace and had a great view of the grand canal. Napoleon made this his residence and had it refurnished in the Empire style. All of the original furnishings were sold off during the revolution. It was restored in 1963 on the orders of Charles de Gaul. The Petite Trion is smaller as the name implies and was where Marie Antoinette liked to stay. This also suffered some set backs during the revolution when the it became a hostel and the gardens were divided into allotments. Once again, Napoleon came to the rescue and restored it. First for his sister and later for the Empress, his second wife Marie-Louise.
The Grand Trion is built as a single story
