Villefranche su Mer is pretty small and it occupied a strip of land along the mountains and the sea. This bay and harbor were more suited for military fortifications of which there many. The citadel is the one seen above and the is the one that we toured through. There was an art exhibit, a hotel where we saw a wedding and several other enterprises all operating inside the walls. As I mentioned before in a previous post, when the fortified walls were ordered to be removed this structure from 1554 was allowed to remain standing. This was partly due to the aesthetics of the construction and partly due to how well it worked as a fort. We then walked into town for lunch and continued to stroll along the water
Very delicate bridge over the gorge
Steep walls
It is amazing that it has been around for almost 500 years
These ladies asked me if I could take their picture, so I did. That got a chuckle and we saw them four more times as the day progressed
The gate that could swing up and out of the way
Cannons to rain destruction upon the pirate fleets
Round belly
A big red gate and a blue statue from the art exhibit
A tired model
The blue is in sharp contrast with the green and red.
Wood and stone were his materials of choice
Looking out of one of the tower's windows
Carved redwood
Many pieces were outdoors but there were even more inside
Golden
