Hokkaido University has a botanical garden right in town. It was founded in 1887 as an effort to study botany and a small arboretum was planted. Over the years the trees have grown and the gardens have filled out. The rose garden has 200 rose bushes of 20 different varieties. The micro climate must suit them as the blooms were numerous and huge.
