29 May 2025 Rome: The Vatican Crypt

We had to exit the basilica and then travel around to the side to get into the crypt.  It was not easy to find and if Rick Steves had not had it on his walking tour we probably would have missed it entirely.  As is to be expected there were many popes carved into a variety of stone.  It was nice and cool so we enjoyed that as well as seeing the artifacts.

An entirely different entrance

Passing by some saints

Into a smaller area with odds and ends

Then on to popes row

Very lifelike

Architectural renditions

A different hat for every different era

Even an occasional hatless head

Paintings of saints

Many from far away

A very dark stone

Pope John Paul was off in a wing that was not open to the public

The reflection in the glass was interesting

Chained off

Frescos

The Swiss Guard

Berets and all

End of the tour

Now to find our way out

This looks promising

A holocaust themed piece

Pretty large

The Vatican flag fluing strong

Back at the house

Nice sunset
