Iquitos and Casa Morey

We finally got caught by the infamous carry on luggage box. Our bags were slightly too big and so we had to check them on the jetway.  It's probably better because when we got to Iquitos we had to go down the ladder and walk into the building. This way the airline employees carry our bags for us. We were the only plane in the airport with the exception of a four-person seaplane that was sitting off to the side. We walked in past the belt where they were going to drop our luggage. We entered the building and could see the other side of the belt as it emerged.  We stood there for four minutes and our bags were the 3rd and 5th pieces of luggage out. It was a madhouse as we stepped outside with at least 30 taxi drivers trying to get our business. However our Casa Morey driver was there. He got us loaded us up and drove and half an hour to the hotel. The drive reminded me of Vietnam.  The three wheeled scooters and motorcycles outnumber the cars 100 to one at least.  At times there were eight different vehicles across the four-lane road. We were happy to make it to the hotel unscathed.  The hotel was built in 1909 and is lavish to say the least. It was refurbished in 2010 and we are very pleased with our room. As I speak into the phone I can hear the echoes off the walls of our room, it is that large. The man who built it back in the day was big in the rubber business.  there are remnants of the former functionality of the rubber making business. They would make very large rubber balls and then ship them downstream. There are remnants of the former rubber manufacturing business that occurred here in this building. Apparently they would make very large rubber balls and then ship them Downstream. The large rubber balls were stored in the first floor. It must take really big balls to make a building this big. It has been many things in the intervening years including a bank, a private university, a discotheque called Papa Piranha and now it's a hotel.  We looked around a bit and then had a snack to eat.
