12 June 2022: Vancouver BC: On board the Orion

We are in our Cabin #4001 and we love it.  It was a long time coming but we are here, we drop off our jackets and head off to dinner at the "Chef's Table" for dinner.  It was quite nice with the highlight being a Viking take on Peking Duck.  They has mini pancakes, crispy duck breast slices on top of a duck meat egg roll.  Yummy!  We skip more than half the wine parings as  we had already had some drinks outside while waiting.  Once we got back to the room 5 of 6 of our bags had arrived but we were still missing one of them.  I asked around and they were able to find it pretty quickly so a minor disaster was averted.  We wait and watch for the ship to leave port but by 11 PM it was time to turn in.  From pour beds we heard a long series of noises that I imagined that I knew what they represented.  First we heard the engines rev up loudly and the ship was shaking during this time.  I attributed this event to the side thrusters pushing us off of the dock.  This repeated a few times and Leslie wondered if they couldn't get the engine started.  It sounded like that, but I think it was just noisy when they used the side thrusters.  Then I heard a loud metallic clang.  I thought that this must have been contact with the ship from a tug boat, but that did not seem right.  Then we heard the anchor being released, this did not seem like the behavior of a ship leaving.  That was very loud and then they must have been shortening the chain as we could hear a motor pulling the chain back in a little bit at a time.  Once all these noises subsided we fell fast asleep.  Leslie gut up very early and was surprised to see that we were still in Vancouver!  At 8 AM the Captain made an announcement to the whole ship.  He said that a cable had broken, this was the loud clang.   This cable was used to deploy the tender boat.  This is critical to ship safety so it had to be repaired before we could leave.  Arghhh!  We are going to have to skip one of our ports of call and wont be able to leave until the evening of the 13th a full day late.

We were the first to move down this hallway!
