13 October 2023 Athens: The National Archeology Museum Part 2 Ptolemaic Egypt and Pottery

 


Egypt was ruled by a Greek Dynasty from 305 BCE to 30 BCE and although artifacts from this time seem purely Egyptian.  That must be that the Greeks adopted the Egyptian culture as their own. Then on the second floor there was a a huge selection of pottery.  The last display was items found on the Island of Thera  that were preserves in volcanic ash.


Many small amulets were buried with the dead.  Here is a hedgehog or porcupine

This female figurine with a bird like face has seven fingers on each upturned hand and the large moveable legs end with five and six toes respectively from Thebes and is 2700 years old

Seashells found inside this bowl from 1600 BCE after an eruption


Akrotiri isa village on Thera island that had an intact village preserved in volcanic ash.  The wooden bed was burned away by the ash but the outline of the bed was preserved
