23 October 2023 Split: Home of Diocletian's Palace and a Fine Meal

Split is named for a tiny yellow flower, first named by the Greeks, then the Romans then in the local language, but always the name for the little flower.  The highlight of the town is the Palace of Diocletian, a 3rd century Roman Emperor.  He was the first emperor to retire.  This was after 20 years of very effective rule.  His palace was built in only 10 years from 295 to 305 CE.  It is spread over half of the old town and is massive.  Immediately after his death the locals moved into the palace and hundreds of people still live in the center of the palace grounds.  We did a cursory exploration, which leaves the detailed exploration for later.   We shopped a bit and then went out for dinner.  Dinner at Bajamonti was exceptional with a veal tomahawk steak and three superb pizzas for the rest of us.  Leslie tried a new gin, Alkkemist, and I had a great fruity local wine.  The Dalmatian coast makes a full bodied dark red "Black" wine that is similar to the Zinfandel
