At 10 AM, our driver passed right by us while we were waving to him from the side of the road. He drove 200 feet uphill and parked. This was not going to work for us. After telling him this, he first tried to turn the van around and drive back the wrong way. Then he said he would carry all the luggage up there, which we declined. Finally he backed down to where we had been standing all along. When we got loaded, we had to drive a narrow one lane road that climbed the mountain behind Dubrovnik. There were many switchbacks and eventually he turned left where there was a not left turn sign. The coast drive was amazingly beautiful with small and medium sized towns perched along the sea. We drove over the huge 2.4 km long bridge that cost more than 500 million Euros to build. It connected parts of Croatia that were cut off by a strip of Bosnian territory. Then we drove through the vast Nereta River delta that is very fertile and liked with orange trees. Our driver stopped and bought is a bag of oranges. More rugged mountains lined the road as we traveled a total of three hours to get to Split.
A fine Coratian family in their red and white checkered clothes
Looking out over the edge
No room for more than one
Halfway up the mountain
Another switchback
The islands off the coast
It says no left turn but we turned anyway
Looking back to Dubrovnik
And he is talking very loudly on the phone while driving...at least no texting
The two way road is not much larger
The bridge we saw from the port
More small towns
Craggy rocks
Crazy for the bike ride
These boars looked particularly mean
Looked like an Azzurs clone
Car wreck
Nestled in the pines
And the cypress trees
So green
Winding into the tunnel
Range after range of peaks
This looks like a huge extended town wall
Inlets and bays everywhere
The giant bridge
This is as close to Bosnia Herzegovinian that we were able to get
The river delta
10 km wide and filled with canals and farms
Time for produce
The River Nereta
Small towns on either side of the river
A very picturesque place
Foot hills and leg hills with a town
A dragon's backbone
A huge bare rock face
Towns sprouting out of the bare rock
The sign indicates bears and wolves and this tunnel has a wildlife corridor
This big rock cliff marks the start of Split
Cliff castle
Split in the distance
Cliff Castle was named for the town Cliff
Also a Game of Thrones site
Cliff and Cliff Palace
With a Cliff in the background
A fully finctioning Roman Aqueduct that is over 2000 years old
Still delivering water from the mountains
If everything is in the same general direction, is there a need for individual signs?
The football stadium
We have made it to the port
There sat the Emerald Azzura, the ship we left two days earlier
It has been 1 year and 139 days since we began our Migration
