26 October 2023 Split: The Treasury in Split

The treasury held mostly religious objects.  We entered the palace from a different gate where there was a large statue of Gregory of Nin.  He worked against thew Pope and introduced the Croatian language ion the religious services way back in 926 CE.  The gate was guarded by Centurions who kept the hoards out by posing for pictures and then asking for money.  There were offered two different types of combo tickets. The green ticket with the Treasury, the Cathedral, the Baptistry and the Belltower.  The yellow ticket with The Treasury, the Cathedral and the Belltower.  So we picked green ticket only to find the door to the Baptistry closed and locked.  More on that in a later post.

This old castle with bricked up windows is ready for gentrification

28 feet tall!  He looks more like a wizard than a Bishop

This is the finger where the spells come from

One of the many steeples in Split

The gate is open and the Roman soldiers are bottom right

Amazing original stonework

Round glass pucks in the windows

Yes folks still live here

Some of the most amazing mosaics yet, displayed in the Treasury

Thousands of years ago this stone was carved

Scary faces

This knight lived from 1430 to 1490

Parts of churches that no longer exist

Gold relics

This icon of the Virgin and Jesus from 1280 is strange since the Virgin has three hands

Only 11 of the disciples are here, they did not say which one was missing but I think it must have been Judas

Gold!

There were several silver busts with different openings for relics to be placed

Marco de Dominis was the the Archbishop of Split from 1602 to 1616

He was a scholar and above is a diagram of the refraction of light from a raindrop.  This is how a rainbow is created and so the Pope was not happy about a non-divine origin for rainbows.  As they said in those days he attracted the malign attention of the Inquisition and was condemned along with his works

Silver and gold

The temptation of St Anthony, devils giving him a hot foot, poking him in the side and the pig a symbol of lust

Some huge illuminated manuscripts

It has been 1 year and 142 days since we began our Migration
