Situated at the narrowest point in the Oresund sound between Zeeland and what is now Sweden, is Kronborg Castle. For 400 years or so it was the main toll collecting location for the king of Denmark. It used to be Denmark on both sides so tbe King was able to fortify and defend this position. It was also known to be the location of Hamlet by Shakespeare. There is some speculation that Shakespeare may have actually been at the Castle. James the King of Scotland spent his honeymoon at this Castle. He brought along actors from Shakespeare's group with his entourage. So Shakespeare if he actually existed might have actually been there. Ships that went by the castle had to pay 1% of the value of the cargo to the King. The King then had the option of buying the entire cargo for that price. If you under valued your cargo the King might purchase it at a bargain price. If you over value your cargo and the King doesn't buy it you have to pay a much higher tax.
