The Church on the Sacred Blood

In 1881 Alexander II was riding on his coach when a man threw a bomb. It punched a hole in the carriage and when the Czar got out to look at the damage. A second bomb was thrown.   This bomb killed Alexander and his blood was spilled on the cobblestones. A church was built to commemorate the Czar.  He had emancipated the serfs 20 years earlier.  The church took 24 years to build and went 1,000,000 rubles over budget.  It was being renovated while we were there and one of the onion domes was under wraps.  very long line to get in but our guide had the shortcut. We went inside and it was crowded again but the mosaics were so beautiful that we stuck it out and toured the entire church.
Two of the most ornate Spires

Here is part of the Crowd waiting to get in

It is so massive that the image gets distorted by the camera

The top most Spire is under construction for renovation

This is the carriage with the hole in it that Alexander was riding

The carriage from the back

We do not have to wait in line since our tourguige had an Express line to get our tickets

This is how it would look on a sunny day

This is the view that the workers would have while they're working on the Uppermost dome

The ceilings are so very tall and every square inch is covered in mosaics

Wooden Chapel is on the inside and in the chapel are cobblestones that the sacred blood was spilled upon

The chandeliers were as impressive as the ceilings

There was a model of the building inside the building

Icons on the chapel were original. Chalk outlines of where the icons used to be

Mosaic work hundreds of feet up in the air

The ceiling above one of the interior chapels

Doors like you've never seen before

All the parts go together

Even the floor was a piece of art

The cobblestones are below this alter

The original cobble stones are here

A place for candles

I like the contrast of light in this picture

This is a picture of a bomb that landed in the roof during World War II. The interior was used as a morgue during the war

Departing the church

There was a long line out of tourists and shops leading to the church
