15 October 2021 Vienna: The Papyrus Museum and the Giant Ferris Wheel

As seen on TV and in Movies this iconic Ferris wheel is a classic.  Even more classic are the 3000 year old papyrus on display in the Papyrus Museum.  The displays were well thought out with detailed explanations.  The writing on the papyrus included Hieroglyphics, Greek, Roman, Coptic, Arabic and other scripts spanning 3000 years.  Each scrap of papyrus was valuable and often they were reused.  Some of the examples were receipts from butchers, wine merchants and bakers.  Some were tax records, or contracts or descriptions of marital disputes.   They also had a very unique Roman map.  It was not so representative but more like a road map with Rome in the middle.  Since the day was so nice we went to the Wurstelprater amusement park and rode the Ferris Wheel.  The wheel was constructed in 1897 about the time of the Eiffel Tower and has been in operation ever since.  It has a diameter of 200 feet and it can be seen easily on the skyline.

Entering the crypt

Some of the earliest pieces were from 3000 BC

Other artifacts were scattered amongst the displays

Arabic

Hieroglyphics

An early collector who helped establish the museum, and a man with a fine mustache

Many of the pieces were fragmented

This was a map of sorts.  It is not geographically representational.  What I mean by that is the water features were minimizes and it is not drawn to scale.  Instead it had Rome in the center and it draws out the many roads and lists distances between waypoints.

This shows all the regions that were found on the map

This was a wide promenade used for bikers and joggers

We approach the wheel

The cabins are quite large and are enclosed

Lots of steel and iron

And some flowers too

Caw caw caw

It really is impressive in size

Looking out to the park shows a large green space

Each cabin is quite large

The center pole on the top of the cabin was the pivot point where the entire cabin would rock

I wonder what the menu might be?
