5 October 2021 A drive through the Vosges Mountain in France

We got on the road about 9:30.  It is probably a good thing that we did not start earlier or we would have been driving through fog banks.  We went north and turned west at Selesat and almost immediately we started climbing.  We continued to climb and curve around.  We saw horses, sheep and cows along the way.  It was a real treat to see the countryside of France and to see the mountains and valleys along the way.  We went through a 7 km tunnel and emerges into the sunshine!  Everything looks better in the sun.  It got colder as we climbed and the low was 50 degrees with a brisk wind.  We changed roads a good dozen times and drove through a half dozen towns.  We had thoughts of having a roadside picnic but the weather conditions combined with the selection of foodstuffs in to cooler pushed us towards eating at a restaurant.   Leslie did a quick search and came up with a winner!  It is located in a huge Chateau that goes back to Roman times.  They say Julius Caesar probably visited way back in the day.  We ordered a variety of salads and plates.  I got a beef tongue with picante sauce and both Laura and Leslie ordered salads.  The quiche looked so good that Leslie asked for a slice of quiche.  Of course the salad she ordered was huge.  Then the quiche was a 6 inch diameter quiche and it came with a regular sized salad.  So needless to say there was sharing going all around.  This cafe had all sorts of wines, beers, preserved fruits, and crafts.  We made sure that we purchased a good number of these items.  What a great lunch spot.

What is this castle in the clouds

The trees were mostly evergreens but some of them are beginning to change colors

Yet another spire poking up out of the trees

This rest area was the Aire de Mississippi.  We figured that since Mississippi is 50th out of 50 in so many categories that the French would make this their worst rest area

This home owner must be retired!

Once we got out of the mountains the sun broke out.

We googled a lunch spot on the fly and won the lottery with our selection

A bicycle build for a chicken!

The cafe looking into the wine racks

All the selections on the menu were available here in jars

Here is the claim that Julius Cesar slept here

Leslie over ordered a bit

There were potatoes in Laura's salad

My side salad was big

Lots of potatoes on my dish as well.  In fact there were potatoes in Leslie's salad too

Lots of items to look at and buy

What time is it regionally?  The same time...

We missed this turn for the cafe on the way in.

Yes, this is the correct way

Who wouldn't think to drive right through here?
